Wedding Day Tips & Tricks:
Even though I try my best to make sure your makeup lasts all day, sometimes it isn’t always possible. Tears of laughter and love, battling the elements trying to get that perfect photo and even that dreaded cake in face moment - PLEASE DON’T! All these instances can lead to a few mishaps so I like to equip my brides with some top tips and tricks to keep you looking beautiful until the wee hours.
Tip One
It’s so simple but so effective - try not to touch your face. It seems easier to do than it really is. I’m sure with Covid, we have all become a little bit more conscious about this habit and hopefully started to realise how much we actually touch our faces throughout the day.
So many people I have spoken to say that their makeup doesn’t last and becomes very patchy by the end of the day. The first question I ask is, “Do you tend to touch your face?” Most people don’t notice that they are doing it - I’ll admit I’m the worst for it when I have a ‘little friend’ pop up on my chin which only makes the spot more noticeable.
On the weeks running up to the wedding, try and catch yourself out. When we are bored, stressed and distracted, we tend to do this more often. Get into the swing of stopping yourself - family, friends and colleagues are also fab for this - and your makeup will last all day.
Tip Two
If you are an oily skinned girl like myself, it can be such a pain when makeup slides off certain areas and you go from “Glowing Goddess” to “Oh God What a Mess!”
My saving grace is to carry a pressed powder in my bag. It will help with any unwanted oils and keep makeup in place. Also, if it has a bit of colour, it generally means it will give you some coverage as well. This can help to disguise any areas that are starting to go patchy. I use a fluffy powder brush (not dense) to avoid any cakeiness.
Another product I always carry is my lipstick or balm. Even if the lipstick is super matte, it can still come off after eating and drinking especially around the centre of the lips. I keep a spare lippy in my bag to top up after dinner or if you don’t have the exact shade, a lip balm can help fade and disguise the problem.
Tip Three
Tears, whether they are happy or sad, will more than likely happen. This is a tip I tend to share with the whole bridal party - especially the mummies!
If they do come, I suggest to use your finger tip and swipe into the eye rather than away. Pushing inwards will limit the amount of disruption to the face. It’s better to have a little eye makeup off rather than a black mark across your cheek.
Another good way to deal with tears is to very lightly pat them dry. I stress lightly as a heavy hand can take off foundation and leave the face patchy.
Tip Four
Lashes can seem like a daunting extra especially if you are not used to wearing them. My suggestion is that you first of all figure out what type of person you are i.e. a crier or not and choose you lashes based on that.
If you are prone to a little cry or are likely to get hay fever or watery eyes then you might want to invest in lash extensions or opt for individuals. This will take the worry out of lashes lifting or coming off.
There is such a great choice of strip lashes which is what makes them so versatile and appealing. They can range from super natural to super fluffy and glamorous so this makes them a great option for those who like a choice. I would advise trying strip lashes out at your trial if you have not worn them before or don’t wear them very often. This will give you a good idea on whether you find them annoying or even want a different style. Enquire before you trial so that your Makeup Artist can get a range of styles in if you are unsure of what you want. Lashes can really change the whole eye makeup and even the shape of you eyes. If you prefer super natural but want a little something, then get the Makeup Artist to invest in some ‘accent’ lashes which are half to size of regular lashes - I use these on Mothers of the Brides and anyone who is worried about lashes lifting over the course of the day.
These are just some tips and tricks that I have learnt over the years to help keep you looking as fabulous as you did that morning. As I said before, the best person to ask if there’s a particular concern of yours, is your Makeup Artist. They can help guide you on what might work for you. Trials are also amazing for this! I try and get my brides in in the morning or early afternoon so that they can be confident that it will last.
Please remember, things do happen and the most important thing is to have an amazing time and don’t worry too much about it!
